Arts Council Names Joy Poe as New Executive Director

The Transylvania Community Arts Council proudly announces Joy Poe as their new Executive Director. In her position, Poe will oversee numerous art events, cultural offerings, and art education programming provided by Transylvania County’s non-profit arts organization.

“We welcome Joy Poe to the Transylvania Community Arts Council,” said Courtney Mason, Board President. “We are delighted that she will be leading the organization going forward. Her knowledge of our art community and her background as an artist and business entrepreneur will serve our community well.”

Poe received her Bachelors of Art in art from Brevard College and a Masters of Entrepreneurship with a certificate in Digital Media Marketing and Public Relations from Western Carolina University.

After Brevard College, Poe spent two years studying classical drawing at The Fine Arts League of Asheville, an atelier-style school led by artist Ben Long. She has participated in Brevard’s creative community as an undergraduate student, community and college educator, professional artist, maker- entrepreneur, and as an arts business mentor.

“My desire to support artists comes from having worked as an artist. It is so important to have business skills to succeed as an artist,” said Poe. “I intentionally focused my education on creative entrepreneurship within Western North Carolina. I wanted to understand where artists in my community fit in the landscape of the arts so that I could envision a path for myself and my fellow artists to thrive in our creative endeavors.”

Poe begins her new role during a time of challenges and uncertainty. Mason said she “feels confident that Joy can lead the organization and that the Transylvania Community Arts Council will continue to flourish in the years ahead.”

The Transylvania Community Arts Council offers art exhibitions, arts in school programs, summer art camps for students, adult workshops and seminars, a community pottery program, and coordinates Brevard’s 4th Friday Gallery Walks. Poe will be responsible for strategic planning and growth, as well as building on current programming.

“I feel certain all roads have led me to this position,” said Poe. “Although these are challenging times, I believe this is a pivotal time to support Transylvania County’s creative community. Together we will build a stronger organization that continues to fulfill its mission to the wealth of artists in our county.”

Poe replaces the previous Executive Director, Tammy Hopkins, who led the organization for over 14 years. Cindy Rehm had served as Interim Executive Director since November. The Transylvania Community Arts Council extends gratitude to both Hopkins and Rehm for their leadership and dedication to the arts in Transylvania County.

Transylvania Community Arts Council has offered art programs to the community for 35 years. The mission is to enhance the quality of life in Transylvania County by celebrating and nurturing the creative spirit of artists, youth and individuals throughout the County. Among the signature programs are Arts in Schools, the Pottery Program, Community Gallery Art Exhibits and organizing the offering of Fourth Friday Gallery Walks.
