Introduction to Nature Journaling

Are you looking for a meditative, enriching way to record your love of plants and nature?

Nature journaling uses the power of observation and identification of plants to leave creative observers inspired and mentally refreshed. We will discuss what to put in your nature journal and learn some basic drawing skills to get you started followed by an opportunity to create a journal entry.

During the workshop, you will:

  • Learn what to include in a nature journal

  • Explore simple drawing techniques (no experience needed)

  • Create your first journal entry

Escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoying exploring this fulfilling activity! Light refreshments will be provided, although participants may bring their own water bottles and snacks if they prefer.

Location: Transylvania Community Arts Council (349 S. Caldwell St., Brevard)

Registration Fee: $20

What to Bring:

  • A few specimens of your choice such as:  Leaves, twigs, acorns, dried blooms, etc.

  • Pencil (#2 or mechanical, if you have one); paper will be provided, but you may also bring your own sketchbook and art supplies.

About Mary Knierim, Facilitator

In 2017, Mary became a Durham County Master Gardener, where she discovered the fascinating science of plants and the natural world. Drawn to botanical art as a perfect blend of science and creativity, she earned a Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the North Carolina Botanical Garden in 2021. Mary finds peace sketching outdoors, refreshed by the process regardless of the outcome. She is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (National and Carolinas Chapter), the North Carolina Botanical Artists Circle, and the Western Carolina Botanical Club.
