Music for the Nativity: Christmas Music from the Medieval to the Early 20th Century

$0.00

Across more than a thousand years, composers have turned to the story and imagery of Christmas as a source of inspiration, creating music that ranges from meditative to exuberant, from sacred ritual to community celebration. This three-week series explores that extraordinary tradition through some of its greatest works.

We’ll begin with the luminous carols and chant-based songs of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, when the season’s stories were woven into both church and folk music.

The second week focuses on J.S. Bach’s magnificent Christmas Oratorio, a masterpiece of Baroque craftsmanship that transforms the familiar narrative into a vibrant tapestry of chorus, aria, and orchestra. We conclude in 20th-century England with music by composers such as Benjamin Britten, whose Ceremony of Carols reimagines ancient texts with modern harmonies and emotional depth.

Join us for a musical journey through centuries of creativity, exploring how artists across time and place have captured the beauty, mystery, and human spirit of the Christmas season.

Registration is not required but is appreciated so that we have ample handouts and seating.

Registration Fee: A donation of $10 per person is respectfully requested for each session. Light refreshments will be served.
