Masterpieces of Modern Music: Engaging a New World of Sound and Meaning

$0.00

Transylvania Community Arts Council invites music lovers of all backgrounds to embark on a thrilling six-week exploration of early twentieth-century soundscapes in Masterpieces of Modern Music: Engaging a New World of Sound and Meaning. Led by Brevard-based musicologist and organist Mark Hall, this Wednesday evening series at the TC Arts Center (349 S. Caldwell St.) dives into the bold and brilliant masterpieces that redefined what music could sound like—and what it could mean.

From Stravinsky’s riot-inducing Rite of Spring and Schoenberg’s revolutionary Pierrot Lunaire, to Bartók’s intense String Quartet No. 4, and Ives’s kaleidoscopic Three Places in New England, each session features vivid listening and lively conversation. The journey continues with Varèse’s all-percussion Ionisation, Ligeti’s eerie and weightless Atmosphères, and Penderecki’s searing Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, culminating in the transcendent beauty of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

No musical background is required—just an open mind. Modern music isn’t beyond you—it’s waiting to be heard, and you’re more ready than you think. Each week combines accessible commentary, high-quality recordings, and group discussion to illuminate how composers shattered old rules and invented new musical languages between 1900 and the 1960s.

The course is free to attend, though donations are welcome to support TC Arts’ mission “to enhance the quality of life in Transylvania County by celebrating and nurturing the creative spirit of artists, youth and individuals throughout the County.”

For more information and registration, call 828-884-2787 or visit www.tcarts.org. The series begins at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, September 10 and runs for six consecutive Wednesday evenings.

Registration is appreciated, but not required. Although there is no registration fee, a $10 donation is respectfully requested for each session.
